  1. I've been trying to do a SVCD MPEG, using the TMPGenc wizard. I select the NTSC SVCD. The source file is a 480X480 capture that I am frameserving with VirtualDub. The only filters I have running on VirtualDub are a crop (4 pixels on every side) plus a brightness/contrast adjustement. The capture file is fine; it's MJPEG, quality 18. Looks perfect aside from the interlacing (is that my problem?)

Anyway, I can't figure it out. During encoding, I can see the picture fine. TMPGenc gets done, and I still see the picture. However, I load it in Zoom, or Windows Media Player, and there is not video. The audio is fine. If I resize the zoom player when stopped/paused, I can see the video still frame. Then I hit Play and it disappears.

Thanks for any help; hopefully I provided enough info for you all.

If you get an error message when opening the video or audio like file unsupported
or you get an empty(black) video preview window
or the video look wierd in the video preview window like green or purple or pink
Be sure that you have installed the DivX Codecs (both DivX 3.11, 4 and 5) and also try with the Nimo Codec Pack. If that does not work try to change the codec reader settings in TMPGEnc under Option->Environmental settings->VFAPI plug-in and right click on the DirectShow Multimedia File Reader and increase the priority to 1 or 2 and try open the video.

  3. Thanks, but I don't think that's it. This video has nothing to do with DivX on either end. The input is MJPEG, and the output is SVCD MPEG2.

  4. Actually you need an MPEG2 codec installed on your system (windows only comes with MPEG1). You can d/load a free one here:

    That should fix the problem

I should have highlighted the part that applies to you. Read the part about environmental settings. You did not mention if you changed them.

  6. OK...thanks guys, both of you...

Still not working. I did go back and change the priority to 1 and then 2 on DirectShow.

I also downloaded the FreeDVD codec and installed it.

Same thing...I play the video, and can "see it" when resizing the Zoom player. Otherwise it's a black screen. WMP doesn't work either.

I'm using XP, by the way, not sure if I mentioned that.

I have just recently (10 days) reinstalled XP due a system upgrade, and I haven't put my old PowerDVD back on there yet. Maybe trying that will help. I'll re-post on that.

Thanks again, and I'm still listening to suggestions...

  7. OK...the follow-up, with good news and bad news:

I installed PowerDVD. Using it, I can play those files, and they are perfect as I can tell.

Zoom and Windows Media Player still will not play them.

This isn't the end of the world...I don't use MPEG-2's that much, so using PowerDVD to play them won't kill me.

I just really loved Zoom player from the start though! I've got my little FastMedia remote programmed for it. That's the good life.

So I'm still listening if you guys have any more suggestions.
