  1. I just bought this software & don't really know my way around it. When I try to author a disc with a compliant MPEG file, the TMPG 4 wants to re-encode my video. so that a normal 25-30 minute process takes 4 hours.

What have I missed, or what am I doing wrong ? Does this program ALWAYS re-encode the video files ?

I own the program. I been using it since it came out. And no it dont reecode the files. It will reencode files that aint dvds mpegs. It has to be a mpeg 2. 48 audio for the program to not covert the mpeg. I hope this helps.

Versions 1.5 and 1.6 are the last versions that did not reencode the video.

Versions 2, 3, and 4 force a reencode with no option to turn it off.

    Some links about it:

  4. It was strange to me that the trial version did NOT do this, yet the full version does. In both cases I used different movie files, but both encoded with TMPGEnc in NTSC format. One possible reason may be that the authored DVD that took 4 hrs, was a CBR and the shorter was VBR, although the MPEG file was 30 minutes more in length.

The Doom9 site suggested using VOBs as a work around. anybody do this ?

I have used version 4 and it does not reencode any of my compliant files. Try the following:

After you've imported the file, click on the SETTINGS button for the track (you should be at the SOURCE window). When the window titled TRACK opens, click on the VIDEO tab. For the ENCODER MODE: setting, change it to Automatic (Smart Rendering Prioritized). You may want to check on you settings for audio as well.

    Hope this helps.

  7. After some searching & the advice on this forum, I discovered my mistake. I did set the drop down menu to re-encode by accident. I put the selection back on Smart rendering & NO problems. Thanks to all who helped. I appreciate it.

  8. On the Source screen (after adding a file) I always click on the Track's Settings button then into the Video tab and slide the Picture Quality: slider up from 90% to 100%.
