  1. I really like the noise reduction filter in TMPGEnc, and have yet to find one that is as easily used as it, especially for VirtualDub. I really like Divx rather than MPEG-1/2, but can't find a filter that as good as the TMPGEnc one. Anyway I could run the TMPGEnc filter through VirtualDub? And is there a soften block noise option for VirtualDub? Don't like those macroblocks. Do AVIs have a GOP stucture that can be modified as in the Kwag templates? I can make some really high quality MPEG-2s. I figure if I use the same methods with DivX. It will be amazing.

    Thanks in advance.

Check SansGrip's filters. They're probably the best AviSynth filters made.

Read specially on "FluxSmooth" and "Blockbuster"

Edit: You can use them with Vdub via an .avs script.

  3. Thanks for the fast reply. How exactly do I use theses? All text editing? I have used AVISynth before but only for resizing and Subtitling.

Oops , sorry, I'll narrow it down
Here's the modified version of FitCD and link to SansGrip's filters: http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2142
They are also mirrored every hour here: http://www.kvcd.net/sansgrip/avisynth/

More info on the link I gave you above ( http://www.kvcd.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=28 )

  5. I guess the blockbuster is for removing macorblocks by adding noise? Even at low bitrates?

  6. does the blockbuster work like soften block noise?

Don't even bother using "Soften blocks". The result is worse that if you leave it off.
FluxSmooth is a combination of spatial filter and temporal filter together. It's better that TemporalSmoother and better than Convolution3D filters

  8. But doesn't this just clean up the source? Or does it soften macroblocks in the final encode?

The cleaner the source, the cleaner the destination.
Yes it does help A LOT with final macroblocks, and Blockbuster ( "noise"and/or "dither" methods ) filter basically eliminates DCT blocks ( the dancing blocks you see on dark areas ) almost completely.

  10. As far as the motion search quality of VirtualDub. I know that you can vary it in TMPEnc. How can you do so in VirtualDub? Or is that part of the codec properties?

That would be dependent on the CODEC. If you're capturing with Huffy codec, which I strongly recommend, motion estimation doesn't apply.

  12. Forgot to mention that this is a DVD backup to DivX. Sorry. I hope the same filters apply when doing a DVD rip.

Well, that's already "one more generation" of compression. You're going to have to make a test yourself and see how it looks!
