  1. I am using HI 8 to capture on Ulead movie factory. My goal is to burn to DVD-R with best sound and picture.
The following are the capture settings i used:

    30 fps
720 x 480 resolution, UYVY (what does UYVY mean?)
    48khz, 16 bit stereo sound
    video capture filter (video properties)

Anyway I captured 60 seconds of video to AVI and it took up 555 megabytes of storage space. There is no way I can store 2 hours of video tape to my hard drive.
Why does it take up so much space? What am I doing wrong?

I capture with Ulead Video Studio. When AVI capture is available, so are the codecs. Check the Comparisons chart at left to see which codec is right for you.

  3. So.... do the codecs "compress" AVI files to make them smaller. Then you can convert that one to mpeg2.

I just don't have the hard disc space (60 gig free) to put a 2 hour video onto a dvd, at the rate of space that my current AVI capture is taking.

    Exactly. Codecs mean compressor/decompressor.
    Hello.
