I running out of disk space and need to backup and remove some files. When I make movies I use Pinnacle Studio DV to edit, add music, etc. and then rendered it to AVI in 1.5 to 2.5 GB segments. I then use TMPGEnc to make my VCDs, XVCDs and DVD-quality MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files, which I then burn to CD-R. I also copied the finished AVI segments back out to my DV tape through my DV camera. O.K., I would like to create backups on my finished AVI's on CD-R (I don't own a DVD-RW drive). My experience is that I don't get very good compression using WinZip when applied to AVI files. I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to backup these AVI's on CD-R. Is there anything that gives me better compression (without loss) so that I could compress 1.5 to 2.5 GB AVI files into 700 MB? Or, is there a utility that would allow me to span these files across multiple CD-Rs?

The word for compression when reffering to AVI's is codec...You would have to experiment...but using virtual dub and a divx codec usally gets most "comercial movies" of an hour and a half down to 700mb or less with very good quality.
