I have several large avi files that were created when I used Windows Movie Maker to edit some concerts. I am left with files of 20Gb or more and was wondering what converter I should use to enabled these to be reuced to fit unto a standard dvd or what format I could convert them to in order to play on a standard dvd player?

A: Dvdflick may be the simplest option to go from avi to dvd
B: Avidemux is a good tool to either convert or compress the avi to a smaller file size so it will fit onto a single disc
C: If default wmv, use windows movie make to output as dv avi (then go with A or B) ... or windows media encoder (to keep wmv, but make smaller file)

A bug in previous line > or B

  3. If you want to split a DV AVI file into ~4GB segments you can use VirtualDub in "Direct Stream Copy" mode. Each segment will be playable and editable. There will be no degradation of picture or sound quality.

You can also use a tool like HJSplit to break the file into segments. But the individual segments won't be playable. You have to join them all back together again before you can play or edit the video.

None of the above will be playable on a DVD player.
