is it possible to decompress an avi(audio and video)then recompress it using a different codec without loseing any quality,so i can convert it? currently i cannot convert it because of the "mmx state" error i vdub. masking bad frames has not worked.

You wouldn't technically decompress it, it would be more like transcoding directly from one codec to another.
Just open the file in VirtulDub, and select the compression setting to change the codec, and then do a FILE | SAVE AVI. If you have a bad frame, you may have to cut it out using the range tools in vdub, and re-join the two good parts using the APPEND AVI SEGMENT in VDub.
