I your having problems with the "append", try Vdub AC3
    http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/virtualdub.html

If necessary save out he audio as uncompressed, then join them back later >Audio > WAV

it sounds lke you want to put 2 divx on 1 dvd ... i think ...

dont try to join anything togther is my suggestion .. just follow the guides on the left for converting divx to mpeg2 .... dvd standard ...

and author each seperate onto a dvd ..

if you dont use perm. subtitles - you will need an authoring program that can take subtitles ...

Two methods, one may only work for you

    Audio > direct stream copy
    SAVE WAV

You have now saved the AC3 as a WAV, rename to AC3 to convert it to WAV with "headac3he"

Next method, and one that I use all the time

    Audio > Full processing mode
    Audio > conversion > 44.1Khz
    SAVE WAV

You now saved it out as an uncompressed WAV at 44.1Khz

    SubStation Alpha ?? for subs
