You can use either DVD2AVI or VirtualDub to convert an MPEG to AVI.

I would suggest you use DIVX codec for the conversion - you can experiment with the DIVX settings to get the size/quality that you want.

    Vdub
    Video > full processing mode
    Video > compression > codec > DivX low motion > 500 bitrate

    Audio > full processing mode
    Audio > compression > codec > MP3/DivX > 128 ? bitrate

    SAVE AVI

    Try other lower values

  4. I am attempting to do the same thing, but when I try to use VirtualDub, nothing happens.

I hit F7 to save avi, and it look like it is trying. The status window's time elapsed field is counting, but noting else changes. It is just sitting there.

    Any ideas?
