capturing from VHS

Hi all
What format should I use when I capture from VHS (analog) .
And I wand the best quality to author DVD (I have DVD burner)
should i use avi and after convert it to mpeg2 or direct to mpeg2?

I capture straight to mpeg2 half D1 (352x576 PAL, bitrate vbr 3500kbs) using a pinnacle pctvplus board using the pctv 5.1 software.

When it works I get more or less the same quality as the original VHS tape. I say when it works because I sometimes get perfect result and sometimes I have audio sync issues.

i capture to avi then convert and i never have the sync issue. i like avi-io then i edit that convert and burn
