  1. Hi,

    I'm encoding a 30sec mpeg 1 clip for the web at 196 X 144. My source is a 720 X 480 AVI file.

I've used CBR with bitrates of 1150, 500, 350, and 250. But they all come out to 5MB or close to it. I've also lowered the audio to 96kbs but I still can't get the clip lower than 5MB

I've seen 30 sec high quality clips before on the web which are only 2MB.

One more thing is that a 19minute Avi file once encoded using the standard SVCD template comes out to 780MB, using a bitrate of only 1150 CBR. How is that people are able to fit whole movies on one cd?

Be sure to change under settings->system-> to svcd or non vcd. If using VCD tmpgenc will "pad" the bitrate to the same even if you change it.

or use some of www.kvcd.net tmpgenc templates.

TMPGEnc is padding the bitrate up to 1150 each time to meet VCD specs. Set the Video Stream Type (under the system tab) to MPEG-1 Video CD (non standard). If you are making SVCDs then you shouldn't have to do this.

At a bitrate of 1150CBR you should fit about 80 minutes on an 80 minute CD. Check your settings, especially the audio bitrate.

  4. Thanks all so simple, knowing the answer. The kvcd template plus did a pretty good job too. My best result for the 30 sec clip was using the KXVCD plus came out to 2.07MB

I'm trying to get the best results possible on a 19minute 16mm movie I made. But the compliant VCD image is soft. While a VHS copy from the same file is sharper. My other problem with it is on pans it gets blurry. Also when Kirk shoots Hansolo with the laser gun, the special effects gets block noise. If you look closely at the actors lips, there is tiny blocks too. I hear so often that VCD is as good as VHS, but I'm not having any luck with it. Any suggestions?

VCD is only as good as low-quality VHS, and it has problems with high action because of the limited bitrate. Noise in your input also uses up part of that limited bitrate, so a bad source results in a worse VCD. You can try making an XVCD or SVCD, or do some filtering.

  6. Anybody got a great miracle Template that is XVCD and works on many DVD players?

If I load the general VCD template, change the resolution to 720 x 486, change the bitrate to 2300 CBR. Will that work good? Still if anyone has some templates out there different than KVCD. ..
