  1. In most of the guides I read, it always suggest a resolution of 720x480 for DVD mpeg-2 encoding. However, I know that 704x480 is a valid supported DVD resolution. This is video captured off VHS so it will make no noticeable difference to use 720 over 704.

It's important that I can encode a 24 minute program in DVD mpeg-2 format so that it is also small enough to be burned to CDR media. I encoded the program at 720x480 and it was just over 900 megs. It is my hope that 704x480 will fit. It will be shipped on CDR media and later authored onto DVD media.

Does anyone else out there have experience with this?

  2. Why not go 720x480 and just lower the bitrate a tiny amount?
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."

  3. I'd rather not give up the bit rate if I don't have to.
