It depends on which DVD player you are playing it on. If you are converting from DVD to SVCD the the 'standard' is 480x576 and VCD (mpeg1) is 352x288) this may seem low res, but plays better than VHS.
My DVD player will play anything I put in it. Let me know more detail what you are trying to do and I may be able to help. I don't know anything about DVD writers though.

  3. Thanks for the reply.

I have the new Pioneer dv-353 and it can play anything. My winnov card will capture my home video at 640x480 @ 30 fps. I just want to know that if I burn the video at his resolution onto a DVD-R, it could be played by an other DVD player. (That can play DVD-R at least.)

  4. when you use spruceup to author dvd, you can do that

just patch the video part ahead in an resolutiom an aothor proggie
will accept like 720 x 576 (pal) or whatever when importing the
video part with the dvd patcher.

you can read about that here, its for svcd in dvdr format, but works
    the same

    http://www.vcdhelp.com/svcddvdr.htm

i also tryed it and works nice with spruceup

    good luck
