I have a DVD movie backed up on my hard drive as 2 AVI's of approx. 680 MB each.
I've tried everything I know so far to burn these files to VCD.
I have used Roxio Videopack 5, where I try the burn option, which means it tries to convert the file first. The file (and my sustem) freezes completely after 10 minutes or so (out of a 50 minute conversion).
I have tried various conversion methods within videopack, same result.
I have tried Nero (5581), it doesn't even begin to convert or burn.
I have also used AVI2VCD and it tanks after a few minutes.
What am I doing wrong?
thanks.
The AVI plays fine in Windows Media Player, by the way.
I have also tried compressing the audio. After compressing the audio, both Videpack and Nero still tank on me.
Help??

Look to the left in the how to convert to VCD. You will find a guide there.
www.vcdhelp.com/convert.htmMay the force be with you. -
Thanks, but I'm past that.
I tried all of the above AFTER reading the guide. That's how I got to progs like avi2vcd and tmpgenc.
Neither works.
Could it be a memory issue?
It looks like the Roxio Videopack starts the conversion process and runs fine (50 frames per second) for up to 25% of the file, and then it freezes my computer. It's almost like it tries to write the entire conversion to memory buffer and then freezes when it runs out of buffer...
Any ideas, anyone?My system:

I tired other guides and had similar problems as you. Now I am converting divx to vcd left and right.
Give it a try. Use exactly what they say.
Basically its 3 steps.
1) Extract audio and convert to 41000hz and create a WAV file
2) Use TMPGenc to make the MPG (VCD)
3) burn the MPG using nero 5.4 (?) making a VCD
That's it. Try it. As I said ...I alos used avi2cd and tried using NERO to convert and burn the VCD from AVi and I tried some other stuff. Follow to the letter and I bet it will work. -
Thanks, I'll give that a try!

OK,
I followed the instructions to the letter. When I get to the TMPGenc part, the file starts encoding and then it crashes after 7 minutes or so, with a read error.
The same file still plays fine in Windows media player...My system:

Well I personally beleive tmpgenc and Nero both to be the approach, but have you tried Ulead DVD ?? It encodes, converts, edits it does it all also have you made any vcds ??

I am trying to fix this problem as well, but I have discovered that if you use nero 5.5 to burn the movie, you can use the video cd option which does cut down the size to 100mb less, but the quality maynot be what you want.
1. Selct Video CD
2. Drag your movie into the new window
3. when it's done checking, select re-encode
Might not be what you want, but it does work
