  1. ok, to rip a dvd u end up with .vob files. when u re-encode these files at another bitrate u end up with an .mpg file. now what i want to do is convert the mpg back to VOB without authoring, because i do not want a menu. dvd movie factory can do this but unfortunately it does not support ac3 sound...is there anything else i can try?

I am curious why you would want to do that...... if you want vob's just use the ones you ripped off the DVD....You can play them straight off the hard drive with most software DVD programs... And there is no menu...those vob's are just the movie you ripped.

  3. because the VOBs are from a dual layered dvd, the VOBs are too big to put onto a DVD-R without re-encoding to a lower bitrate first

OK good answer..but you don't have to go back to vob...You can reduce bit rate by encoding with TMPG to DVD Mpeg2 .... Smaller file size but higher quality than the VCD or SVCD .....Almost DVD
There is a instruction/how to at

  5. i dont think you understand...i know how to do that already...i AM using TMPGenc to get the VOBs to MPEG-2. But to burn this back to DVD the MPEG-2 needs to be 'authored' to be converted back to the VOBs, cause thats all a DVD Player will recognize. You cant just burn the mpeg2 onto a dvd and expect it to play.

  9. DVation,

If you are re-encoding the movie then you would be better off reauthoring the DVD. If you have re-encoded then you have lost your chapter points. Even if this does not matter to you there is still the issue of finding some app that can accurately map your VOBS. I love IfoEdit but I am not convinced that it can do this. If you’re trying this so you can preserve AC3 then 'look' around for a copy of SpruceUp. While this app is no longer commercially available it can be found if you 'look' with some persistence.
