This is just annoying. There are four settings for controlling dashes that indicate speaker change in the General settings of SE called "dialog style." I find that manual changes I try to make do not record the same in the edit. I would well have the dialog style be manual only. But in SE there appears to be a control of dashes with spaces, without spaces, multiples . I don't understand the need for it or the fact that separating a line where a / dash space dash/ exits, will copy as /space dash/ or some such that I have not changed.
Like I said, I'd rather have manual control over most of these settings whether it's time or text.

The "Fix dash in dialogs via style: <your chosen style>" is very powerful and can take a lot of manual labour away. It works on your chosen "Dialog style" at the General section in Settings. Eventhough these possible settings read as quite self-explanatory, do try them out with a short test srt for look & feel. Once having set it to my final preference, I find the usage of the function to be bliss.
In case you still prefer to manually take care of it, simply uncheck "Fix dash in dialogs via style:" in the Fixed common errors list, prior to run it for other purposes. -

Just type the dash key. I don't think there's a hot key for it; it would defy the purpose my guess. Why typing a hotkey combination as typing the dash key involves just one bang on one key, or two if you want a space after.

Ok for hitting the dash key. One thing I noticed was that the dash selection is turned off when installing SE. I checked this with another of my PCs. It explains why my manually entering things with dashes stays as typed. It's a small issue. I may not have explained it correctly. I use double dash/no space when highlighting dialog speaker change. It may not be in the style but I think change of speaker is easier to see. And I'm no speed typer or touch typist at all. It gives me time to think about the dialog, sounds, stage directions etc.
Just now I'm redoing a whole play to get the dailog in better phrases. In other words, the earlier sub-- I think originally from a Whisper or VOSK- had broken dialog continuing on the next screen as in 'to be or not to' with 'be' following on the next video cut next to new dialog.
Such things I've learned to see and appreciate, hence a lot of readjusting for speaker changes, solo speakers opposed to identifying
speakers in an ensemble on stage. And identifying them all when needed for a non- hearing audience which I don't see as common practice.
