Hello everyone, I'm having fun making GIFs from MKV files' frames using VirtualDub (on Windows 10).

Since now, I only added plugin to recognize MKV as files, problem is sometimes the GIF I wanna create has audio on it (and in the MKV files there are softsubs displayed) but I can't find any method to make virtualdub show subs on top of MKV file to make subbed GIFs... Do you know any plugin that does this or the only solution is to hardsub the subs to the file and then use VirtualDub to make the subbed GIF?

    Thank you everyone in advance!

You could extract the subtitle from the mkv with gmkvextractgui. Then get a subtitle filter for virtualdub like the old https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/315058-HowTo-add-permanent-Letterboxed-subtitles-to...aldub-SRTtoSSA and burn in while you convert to gif.

    Oookay, so:

    1) I successfully extracted subs by using your tool
    2) I downloaded the filter you say, that didn't display to VDub apparently because I had x64 version, in fact with x32 version filter appeared on filters' list but...
    3) subtitles weren't recognized because they were .ass and not .ssa, so I used SubtitleWorkshop to convert the files but...
    3) now that the filter shows on VDub filters' list and I have .ssa subtitle file, it shows subtitles but in the middle of the video instead of showing them in the low part, couldn't find how to modify this on the internet (maybe I should change something on src package of subtitler plugin?) and even on Vdub's options

Can't you change any subtitle filter settings in virtualdub?

Then I guess you have to try move the ssa subtitle to the bottom with for example Subtitle Edit. Open the ssa subtitle, select all lines, right click on the subs, choose Sub Station Alpha styles, select Alignment Bottom/Center. Save as a new ssa. OPen in virtualdub again.

I can't find anything on filter settings on VDub, and even after using Subtitle Edit subs are displayed in the middle of the screen... Strange thing is that .ssa subs had alignment on the bottom right and not the middle center, but they were displayed anyway on the middle of the video.

I'm giving up with this anyway, I'll contact the creator of the plugin hoping to solve the problem, thank you Baldrick, you were really helpful!

(You can close the topic if you want ^^)

Have you googled for any other virtualdub subtitle filter?
