Instead of the normal firewire cable?

Seems the firewire port on my laptop is buggered, so thought this cable might be OK?!

  3. That type of cable only works for firewire hard drives. Not for DV camcorders.

Is there anything I can use?

Or do I have to get the port fixed?

  5. If your laptop has a PC Card slot you can use something like this:

and if it doesn't have a slot, then maybe one of these.

the unit has conections in both front/back for video input and output. in this case, the dv video stream travels from the firewire->usb->pc.
if necessary, google search for the best price. this works on my pc and netbook under xp home/pro. i'm using it now, watching tv on my pc while typing this message...

    Product Dimensions: 8.1 x 6.3 x 0.3 inches

My Dell has a slot on the side that would fit something approx 3cm x 7cm x 4mm.

Not sure if its a PC card slot, or express card slot.

Looking at some youtube vids now.

Its a Dell Studio 15 2 years old.

    $170 on Ebay.

Thanks but might as well get the port fixed or put it toward a new laptop.

  10. Yes, those express cards should work. Try to find one that specifies the TI firewire chip. It has the best compatibility.
