  1. I tried out xvid4psp but since I don't know what to select in the "video encoding" part, I wound up with a 5gb file. I think I tried to convert a MPG file to another MPG file or maybe an AVI file. Basically the same issue with Avidemux- selecting anything in the Format just crashes the program.

There's a small problem that keeps me far from replying and helping you mate.
Please in detail explain what you are trying to do, which source you want to encode, what type of an encode you want.
Then of course, I can help you and get you what you want with the encoding.

  3. i need to convert MPG into MPG or AVI (along with subtitles). for xvid4psp i guess i'd like to keep the encoding the same, meaning MPG, but there are too many to choose from in the list. in avidemux's Format option i tried "mpeg video" and other formats when i loaded a MPG, but it crashes no matter what.

What's wrong with the mpg you have? Why the re-encode to another mpg?

That was the question that came to mind for me. Perhaps a download with an extremely wonky codec that doesn't play properly? That happens.

avidemux is actually one of the best converters I've used when it comes to weird codecs but it won't handle everything. I've used openshot to convert something that avidemux crashed on but that only works on linux. I tried an ffmpeg based converter (winff) on the same file but it didn't work any better than avidemux did. I don't know of any other windows solution.

Actually avidemux is, I found, one of those programs that seems very buggy at first. When you actually begin to learn how to use it it doesn't seem so buggy anymore. It's very robust but it assumes you kind of know what you're doing and if you do something inappropriate it'll burp and spit up on you.

If you want to learn about how to use different formats perhaps you should look at the documentation for these programs.

  7. http://www.avidemux.org/admWiki/doku.php?id=tutorial:guide_to_encoding_types I tried. It just doesn't seem to have a guide to filter types and what one I have. All I know is I have "mpg", I don't know whether I have "mpeg 1 video" or "mpeg 2 video" or whether the "Video" thing means the output, or if the "Format" means output. Also I just tried to add the .ass subtitles that someone helped me create- it seems to be the culprit in avidemux crashing. Well I tried- I changed a setting so that the .ass subtitle uses a black box. " I'd greatly appreciate it if someone can guide me through selecting the proper encoding for any program- xvid4psp, freemake, or anything else that can encode .ass subs into any format.
