  1. I have a relatively fast PC and I use Virtualdub mod for video rendering but the render is slow it barely use 30-40 % of cpu while rendering and also I have lot of ram around 24 GB of ram so was wondering if there is any suggestion / tweak to speed things up for rendering.

    Thanks

  2. Use a faster codec, or faster settings in the codec you are using. Use single pass, constant quality encoding rather than 2 pass VBR. Are you filtering in addition to encoding?

  3. How do I do that I am kinda new to all this but I use Divx codec or xvid and what setting should I use I do use filters like smooth and resize sometimes I try using the smart smooth filter but that one totaly slows it down to 1fps in rendering giving me almost 24 hour plus for 40 min video to render so I try to stay away from smart smooth Also

I Have I7980x So is there any option in codec that I should choose to make full use of my processor and possibly of my graphic card gtx 580 Super clocked version

  4. VirtualDub's filter chain is single threaded. So if you're filtering heavily that will become a bottleneck. With Divx and Xvid there's very little quality/size difference between the medium settings and the highest (slowest) settings.

To use constant quality mode in Xvid set the Encoding Type to Single Pass. If the button below that says Target Bitrate press it to make it say Target Quantizer instead. Set the Quantizer value to the right to 2 or 3. At 2 the resulting video will be nearly indistinguishable from the source but maybe a little larger than you like. At 3 it will show a little macroblocking (you won't really notice at normal playback speed) but it will be smaller. You can set the value anywhere from 1 to 31. You can also use decimal values like 2.5. The smaller the quantizer the higher the quality and the larger the file.

Divx has similar settings but the terminology and values are a little different.

  5. Thank you so much for the quick reply, I do use the setting you have it on the screenshot for quality I Use 3.0 But still the rendering is a bit slow I think specially If i use Smart smooth filter http://neuron2.net/hiq/smoothhiq.html this one It slows down the rendering so much is there a way to speed up things If I do use this filter.

Probably not. At least not without changing the filtering quality (you can use a smaller diameter setting). You can encode two videos at the same time though. That will use all your CPU and both will finish encoding in about the same amount of time as encoding just one of them alone.

Last I tried, you couldn't do that with Divx. The codec wasn't working properly -- it slowed to 1/100 the speed if two instances of VirtualDub were using it at the same time.
