Hi, I have videos that are 30-60 minutes in length and would like to make them play faster so they are reduced to 5-10 minutes each.
Is there a good free or low-cost video editor software out there that does this easily?
I use Windows 7, and Windows Live Movie Maker no longer offers a speed-up feature at all.
Thanks for any advice!
Stephanie

Avisynth, then re-encode with virtualdub.
What do you intend to play these back on ? It is a big speed up, and if you then want to watch them on a DVD player or similar then you will find that you have either shed or blended most frames to do it.Read my blog here.

Hi, I want to upload these to my personal website and also to YouTube. Thanks for replying! I have seen others do it from 60 minutes to 4:40, like this video:

You can also do it with just VirtualDub. Set the source frame rate higher and decimate down to the rate you want. For example, if you have a 30 fps video, set the source frame rate to 300 fps and decimate by 10 to get a result that runs 10x faster.

Hi, I just installed VirtualDub. thanks for the link! The problem is, after I chose my video and tried to open it in VirtualDub, it gave me an error:
"MPEG Import Filter: Invalid pack at position 3: Marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream" -
You need a plugin for mpeg2 video, http://home.comcast.net/~fcchandler/Plugins/MPEG2/index.html . Or use the old VirtualdubMPEG2 with the plugin builtin.

Ok, I installed those plug ins and added them to the special folder, and now everything works! Thanks so much Baldrick!
Now, I am a newbie when it comes to video editing (I still haven't mastered Windows Live Movie Maker).
This is what I did: I under "Frame rate", I increased it to 300.000 from 29.xx and then decimated by 10. Is this correct??
So how do I do a "save as" so I don;t override my original video? And can I play it in VirtualDub before saving to make sure it works right?
As you can see I am probably in way over my head.Last edited by mileena; 27th Aug 2010 at 08:59. Reason: experimented with video a little and new info

ok, it's a miracle!! I did it. I just saved the file as an .avi file! and it looks great!
Now all I have to do is take out the audio and insert music! hope that is not hard, but I will play around! or maybe use MovieMaker to add music!
Thanks so much! -
It isn't. All you have to do is reload the AVI and set the audio to the music file. Just have to make sure that the music file is the same length as the video file. Ohhh, and make sure to use Direct Stream Copy for the video portion or else it'll re-encode.

Thanks. I guess the user interface look intimidating at first, but as I got more used to things, it wasn't that hard!
