In general, your best bet is to use ImgBurn, not Nero, to burn a movie or TV Show to disk, if you want to play them in a standalone DVD player.
Are you saving the .avi file as data or do you want to play that on a DVD also? For playing the file in a standalone, assuming that your player will not play an .avi, I usually use DVD Flick for the conversion.
Both programs are free. Look to the left and click on tools. They are both there, fairly simple to use and well worth the download.

Not a lot of information provided in your question, but, as a long-time user of Nero 7 (in spite of the guffaws such an admission usually elicits--always been happy with it), I'm wondering if you've tried NeroVision, which is part of Nero 7? It will take a wide variety of video files (including .avi) and convert them to a DVD-compatible format. It WILL re-encode everything, which will likely cost you some video quality. (Maybe that's the "why" of the aforementioned guffaws, or at least one of the reasons.)
