Have downloaded 3 x video files, named (videofile.mp4.part1.,videofile.mp4.part2.,videofi le.mp4.part3.) If i rename them to (videofile-part1.mp4,videofile-part2.mp4,videofile-part3.mp4) The 1st one plays fine in vlc player but the others do not. I usually use ConvertXtoDVD to burn these to disc, but when i try to add 2nd or 3rd file it just comes up with an error. Any help much appreciated. Do i need to use software to join 1st, or to rename them correctly? I assumed it was just that they are not correctly named as .mp4 files. Is it usually ok just to F2 and rename them? Tottal newbie

most people use winrar to split files, but those should end in .rar or similar, but might still work. the adult video folk tend to use things like hjsplit which will probably put back together into 1 file for you.

  3. Part archives need nto to have .mp4 after the part extension so rename them videofile-part1.rar,videofile-part2.rar,videofile-part3.rar and extract with winrar, highlight all and click extract here.

Part1.rar and r01 files are made with winrar and .001... are made with hjsplit.

Thanks but tried renaming to .rar, it shows as .rar file but wont extract. Tried hjsplit and it joins the files but again it only plays as far as the 1st file, then screen goes black & no sound. I think it may be an error by the person that uploaded it (due to the way the files are named in the 1st place). Any other suggestions? Thanks again for any info.

I believe your last two files are damaged or intentional. anyway.

some apps do not process filenames with "-" (and sometimes, "." dots, too) in the text. when dealing with filenames that I have index, i always try and make them as short as possible, like video.001.avi, video.002.avi, . . .

in your first post you mentioned .mp4, so since you were able to play the first file, that means the last two are as well, and are not archive files. if you are not able to play each of the last two files individually, then i would asssume that the last two are damaged in some way or intentional.

ps: also best to always include filenames inside quotes, ie "c:\videos\video.001.avi" and put such files on a separate drive and in a short, less complicated naming, like the above, for instance. all these things make it that much easier for you and your apps as well as your time.
