  1. This is a first for me. No matter what method I try, every time I try to rename an AVI file it crashes windows. Using XP home edition. Anyone have any problems like this? I might note that the files have been moved around a little but they play fine, just can't rename them.

The file could be locked. See
    http://noeld.com/programs.asp or
    http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/deletelockedfiles.shtml

Maybe you could copy the file, then delete the original?
(Most of the utilities above are actually for deleting files.)

  3. XP without any service packs? The original release had a problem with incomplete Divx/Xvid AVI files. I think it was fixed in SP1. There's also a registry setting that will bypass the problem.

  4. I've got the service pack 2 so everything there should be up to date. I've tried copying the files but that didn't work either. I've been trying to find a program that will allow me to import the file and then save as a different name but haven't found one yet. I'll give the two programs above a try and see what I can do with one of them. Thanks!

  5. Maybe try loading the .AVI file in VirtualDub, then output to a new avi using "Direct stream copy" for both video and audio?

What do you mean by 'crashes windows' ? This seems pretty extreme. Do you get an error message, or windows restarts ?

  7. A message pops up that says that an error has occurred in windows and will have to close.... do you want to send a report, etc.. When you acknowledge the pop up, everything except the wall paper disappears from the screen and then slowly rebuilds. There is always something missing from the the tool bar but not always the same program. You try it again and the same thing happens. Sometimes all you have to do is right-click the AVI name for it to crash and at other times you can actually get it nearly renamed before it happens. The only thing certain is that it happens 99% of the time.

Not a solution to the problem, but have you already tried
to rename the .AVI files via the Command Prompt?

  9. I don't know what was causing the problem but I found a way to work around it. I loaded all the AVI files into JV16 power tools and renamed them there. All went smoothly but I still wonder what the problem was. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

  10. When you right click on an AVI file Explorer opens the file and tries to generate a thumbnail. A bad codec or corrupt file was probably causing the codec to crash bringing Explorer down with it.

Click on Start -> Run and type

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

    Click OK.

If the crashing stops, you know it is a codec/preview problem.

You can turn previews back on again by clicking on Start -> Run and typing

    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

    Then clicking OK.
