Okay, I would imagine this is a simple concept but everything I try fails. So, I have my computer with a DVI out that I would like to connect to both my HD monitor as well as my HDTV via HDMI. In order to do so I purchased a DVI to HDMI splitter that was garbage. It worked about quarter of the time. Now I have also tried using a switch-box and this was another FAILURE. So if anyone has any tips or recommendations please let me know, I would be grateful. This little issue is bothering the hell out of me. Thank You.

DVI/HDMI can be hard to split because the computer and the monitor negotiate an appropriate resolution and colorspace when they start up. A passive splitter will give you a situation where both monitors are trying to talk to the computer at the same time. Smart splitters that can handle that are much more expensive. You are better off getting a graphics card with two outputs and run them in mirror mode.
Then you have problems with HDCP (encryption). HDCP rules don't allow the signal to be split. If you need HDCP (eg, to play Blu-ray with official Blu-ray player software) then you can't use two monitors.
