Hi everybody, I hope you guys can help me with this matter...

I have recently bought a Multimedia Hard Drive (Lacie LaCinema Classic HD 2TB) and I have a HD Ready TV (Philips 32PF5320/10)which has no HDMI connection.

I have linked them with a cable which has a DVI connection from the TV and a HDMI connection to the Hard Drive.Question1: Is that the best way to get the highest quality video?

Now, I have managed to reproduce movie files but I can not manage to get any sound. Although the TV has a DVI Audio In the Multimedia Hard Drive has not the same connection. I have tried connecting an audio (white and red) cable to both devices but I still get nothing.

Question2: How can I get sound for the movie files?

Any help will be appreciated. Many thanks!!

The DVI-D connection is video only. There is no provision for audio in DVI.

You need to talk to Lacie about getting audio out from the audio connectors. It either decodes your files or not. Normal hard drives do not decode.

The Lacie spec shows decode support for the following formats.
    http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=11389

Video Codecs : MPEG-1, MPEG-2 / HD, MPEG-4, DIVX, DIVX HD, XVID, H.264 HD, WMV9 HD, VC-1, AVC/AVCHD (a majority of AVC/AVCHD formats have been tested and are compatible).
Video Format : AVI, MP4, MKV, WMV, DivX, DAT, MOV**, MPEG, VOB, ASF, TS, TP, TRP, M2TS, DVR-MS, DVD-Video (ISO, Video_TS)***
Upscaling : 1080p for standard definition movies
    Audio Format : MP3, WMA, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC*, OGG, FLAC, AC3, MP4, MKA (*supports iTunes-encoded)

I suspect you need to set menus for separate audio out. Consult the manual or Lacie.

You can get one from radio shack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3449316

Plug the red/white plugs into the multimedia hard drive and the and the phono end into the dvi audio input on the tv.

  4. Too bad the TV doesn't have optical audio in. Otherwise you could use HDMI/DVI to get video, Optical Audio to get audio.

What's that 'DVI AUDIO IN' connector (On the TV?) If it's coaxial audio, you could use a Optical>Coaxial adapter like this one from Monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=...seq=1&format=2

I use one of those from my WDTV Live as my switcher just does coaxial audio. This way I get 5.1 audio to my surround sound amp.

  6. I thought it was a stereo pin plug. But you may be right, it could be digital coax.

Unfortunately, looking at some information for that set, it does appear to be just a stereo input. I use my surround sound amp, so I have the audio shut off on my monitors anyway. I haven't heard many TV speakers that are all that great.

If you have a separate audio amp/receiver just output the optical audio from the lacie to it.
