  1. when i burned a dvd and examined in disk properties, it shows zero as used space. but it plays on standalone dvd player. normally it should show the used space and free space. why this. kindly suggest.

Normally, unless you're burning a multi-session DVD or a DVD-RW, the disc is closed/finalized, so you can't write to it again - therefore, no more free space.

DVD players may also have problems with multi-session DVDs (they might not see more than the first 'session,' if any), so it may not be a good idea to create such a disc for use with a DVD player. Some have reported that it works with their players, but it's always a good idea to test - and if you're going to create a disc for use with more than one player, it might be better just to avoid creating a multi-session disc.

How is a disc you can't (or can no longer) write to supposed to have free space?

It should show how much data the disc uses, yes, though on a commercial disc, protection schemes might cause a computer to misread those figures. Why your computer would be having difficulty seeing the used space on a disc you burned, I couldn't say. Can you read the properties of the files (individually, or as a group) on the disc properly, on your system?

Maybe it's burned in a UDF format that your Windows setup doesn't entirely understand.
