letterbox problem on burned dvd ...

Hi!

I just finished a shortfilm and burned into DVD through Toast 10.

The original format on the quicktimefile I exported from final cut is:

Frame size:
1440x1080

Vid Rate
25 fps

Compressor
HDV1080i50

Pixel Aspect:
HD (1440x1080)

Audio format
16-bit integer

Audio Rate
48 Khz

The picture looks good and toast converts the HDV into PAL-size fine but the problem is that when I play the dvd on my dvd player and my old analoge 4:3 TV the picture is to big for the screen.

I thought that it would fit and add a black bar on the top and bottom.

How can I make this film fit both into 4:3 TV and newer 16:9 tv? so that the black bars appears on older tv while it fills the display on newer ones automatically???

Ive tried burn with both with both 16:9, 4:3 and automatic but with the same result. the picture is to big for the tv.

do I have to add the black bars up and down manually? seems strange though.

dvd has 2 display types 4:3 or 16/9. the pixel size is the same 720x576, in pal land. the only difference is a flag to tell the display device to stretch it to 16x9 when needed. i'd guess you need to set the frame size to 720x576 and use the widescreen flag. HDV pixel size is 1440x1080 but displays as 1920x1080 because of the same type of flag dvds use.

hello, if this means :

the picture is to big for the tv.

the original 16:9 movie is vertically stretched once on tv, so 42aedipuss already explained to you the reason

if Toast did a good job (I don't know I don't use it anymore), your file was converted to mpeg2 16:9, and your DVD-VIDEO is compliant with 16:9 and 4:3 tv

so check your dvd-Player settings:
you should have an option about display (with options PanScan / LetterBox / full screen / …): select LetterBox
Wha about the new display? if it's correct, end

if not…
DL myDVDEDit, insert your DVD-R in your mac, double-click on a .IFO file (to open myDVDEdit)
In myDVDEdit:
- (left -top) select a "VTS xx" (named "VTS 1", "VTS 2", "VTS 3", … depending on the number of tracks you used in the DVD-VIDEO)
- (middle-bottom) select the "VTS xx" vertical tab. Take a look to the display pop-up : should be "16:9 auto PanScan and Letterbox" (advised ) or "16:9 Letterbox", all other choices are mistakes.
- Check this aspect flag in all your VTS
if your display options are not OK, the concern is not in your home dvd player but in your DVD-VIDEO (so copy it on hard disk to modify it, change authorisations rights to be allowed to modify it, correct it with myDVDEdit, and burn it again using the donationware LiquidCD and at the slower speed allowed by your burner)

I downloaded myDVDEDit and checked the DVD and the VTS 1 are checked with
16:9 auto pan&scsn and letterbox

so the DVD seems to be correct?

but one strange thing though.

I burned in toast with automatic settings and now I also tried it on my projector but the image seems to be cropped even on the projector. If I use 4:3 its displayed correct but the image is cropped. (If I use 16:9 setting its stretched)

OK UPDATE:
mixed a bit with the setup in the DVD-player and saw that it was on
4:3 Pan&Scan

I changed this to
4:3 Letterbox

and now it works.

but how come other movies I bought from the store always displayed correctly on my dvd even though I had 4:3 Pan&Scan settings on the DVD player???

why did mine not work untill I changed the settings in the DVD player???

My specs in Movie Inspector in Quicktime is:

FPS: 25

I saw on one of those bought DVD that it was set on:
16:9 auto Letterbox

is that a better choice than

16:9 auto pan&scsn and letterbox

OK UPDATE:[/B]why did mine not work untill I changed the settings in the DVD player???

seems you have a bad setting on your home dvd player

some info:

- "16:9 auto PS and LB" means:
if the movie is 16:9 and the tv too, displays normally
if the movie is 16:9 and the tv 4:3, let the dvd player decides what to do (see its settings)

- "16:9 LB" means:
if the movie is 16:9 and the tv 4:3, add vertical black borders

- "16:9 PS" means:
if the movie is 16:9 and the tv 4:3, crop sides to fit all the remaining image to full screen

I like the "16:9 auto PS and LB", the less intrusive setting for DVD-VIDEO
my home dvd player was set to "16:9 LB" when I had a 4:3 tv
but the home dvd player for the 4:3 tv in the living (mainly used by my kids) is set to "16:9 PS" (cropped -but full screen- image for my kids )

So if you want a special behavior, force it. Otherwise, let the user setting (= "16:9 auto PS and LB")
…hope you better understand now this aspect flag

PS: there is only 1 usless flag "16:9", never use it: it displays full screen whatever the tv format (16:9 or 4:3)
