I'm duplicating a DVD with a lot of subtitles.

Is there a way to use PGCedit (or another tool) to deactivate or delete all except the subtitles I want from the VIDEO_TS fileset?

I don't care so much about the menus, dead buttons, etc, but when using the remote while the movie is playing it gets tedious clicking through a dozen languages to turn on/off the one you want.

I know how to rip a DVD and reauthor using only the parts I want, I was hoping for a quicker fix for this problem.

  2. Deactivate, yes; delete, no. Not without demuxing/remuxing. Open the DVD in PGCEdit. Double-click on the movie and in the new screen, in the upper right, you'll see the 'Sub-picture VOBs Decoding Streams'. Click on the ones you want to get rid of and 'Disable'. 'OK' back to the main screen and hit the green-reel-of-film icon near the top right of the main screen, one of a big row of icons. It'll give you a message about fixing the number of streams and you answer 'Yes'. Then in the new screen you'll see what's left. 'OK' back to the main screen and File->Save DVD.

Say there are originally 8 streams and you get rid of numbers 4-8. No problem. If you get rid of 3,5,6,7,8, leaving 1,2,4, then that number four stream gets changed to being the third stream, and it may require some remapping to make the third sub work in the subs menu (although the remote control will work fine). But we won't know which ones you get rid of unless you tell us.

Also, don't forget to disable the buttons in the subs menu pointing to now disabled sub streams. Right-click on the subs menu and hit 'Menu Buttons'. Right-click the buttons on the now disabled languages one at a time and in the new screen go Hide Button->Jump To Non-deleted button. When all done 'OK' back to the main screen and Save.

I think you can actually physically remove the sub streams from the DVD entirely by doing a reauthor using DVD Shrink, followed by replacing the reauthored DVD back into the original by using VobBlanker. I've never done that myself, and don't know the gory details. And it's probably not necessary for your needs.

As long as I can cycle between the remaining subs with the remote, without having to click through 14 other languages, that will be fine.

I tried that once, but had sync problems with the result that took a lot of time to adjust. So I want to do the least invasive changes.

  5. In the left window you'll see all the PGCs, including the menu PGCs which you can easily identify because the number of buttons in each are indicated. Right-click the one that's the subtitle menu (do a Preview if you're not sure which it is) and take it from there. Here's a pic with a menu highlighted. Note that it has 11 buttons indicated:
