I need help! Trying to burn VCD's with NERO 5.5. Downloaded the DEMO worked fine, so bought the real version. Now every time I try to burn, the program gets stuck while encoding. NERO "NOT RESPONDING". I have Windows XP. I read warnings about NERO not working properly with XP. Anyone with suggestion s to fix this or should I give up?

The first thing i'd try is to turn off your anti-virus progam. Also I think the NERO web site has a ASPI driver on it, I'd try that.

I'd also disable XP's buring software. Go into Administrative tools under services, right click 'IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service' And set startup type to 'Disable'

    -Hope this helps

When should I disable Norton Antivirus? Should I disable it and re-install NERO or disable it before I burn a VCD? What does a ASPI driver do? I appreciate the help, but as you can see, I'm a bit of a novice at this stuff.

Just disable your AV before you hit 'burn'

Thanks. I disabled the Windows XP burning program and the burn process on NERO went through. But, the CD speed was only 4X, and then I couldn't play it on the DVD player. I used a MemorexCD-RW, and the response I get when I put it in the DVD player is "This type of disc cannot be played". Could it be the I should use a CD-R instead of a CD-RW?

I did not disable Norton Anti Virus or use another driver.

Yes, my player plays VCD's. I burned 2 movies already with the NERO Demo. Those 2 plays very well on the DVD player. I think my problems lie in the fact that all the video that I am downloading is in "AVI" format. I think I need to encode (convert) into MPEG files? Not too sure. Could it be that in NERO's Demo version it included their MPEG2/SVCD Plug-in and that the regular version doesn't include it and i need to buy it. Damn them if that's the case.

I bought the MPEG2/SVCD encoder. Got it through e-mail. Installed it, ran it and it still didn't work. This is so freakin' fustrating. I followed the directions from VCDHelp's "How to" on converting, downloaded all necessary software, and it still doesn't work. I'm going to give it one more try, I could always use the NERO CD-ROM disk as a "coaster".

    Hi

Been there done it got the t-shirt

I'm sure you will get there in the end, always make sure you have the latest of everything. Windows XP comes with easy cd creator built in, I see you have switched it off.

Recently I upgraded my writer to a 40X, now easy cd creator wont work, waiting for 5.1 platinum to be released... Meanwhile I'm stuck using Nero.

Yep, the writer came with Nero, not my cup of tea but it works very well, not had any problems with it. 5.5.7.8 and the new plug-in Mp3 and Mpeg, all plug-in's are for this release, previous plug-in's have been disabled.

Anyway, I would NEVER use burning software to convert, they don't do a very good job, why don't you convert the AVI with TMPGenc (template) to VCD before you drop them in Nero ?

That's what I did. I downloaded TMPGenc, followed the instructions from VCDHelp, did all the trouble shooting, and nothing. For instance, I downloaded "The Others" from Kazaa.com, can watch the movie on kazaa and windows media player. No problem. The first thing I tried to do when I bought the whole version of NERO was to burn "the Others" onto a disc, I followed the same directions which I used to burn the first 2 copies of movies on the DEMO version of NERO. But the process of encoding keeps stalling. So I tried to use TMPGenc to convert the file. But the same thing happened, the encoding process stops a few minutes into it. Can't understand whats wrong. I hope its just me doing the wrong thing rather than the software not working. At least if I keep at it, hopefully I figure it out. Anymore suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi

Ok, well first things... The AVI's are in many formats, some use the newer codec's and some old. Then there might be some corruption in the download. I don't remember what format "The Others" was in, it was a while ago, I have it on VCD , great ending !!

It very much sounds like you have some bad frames, these are sometimes referred to as Freeze frames, they can crash TMPGenc. The latest version of Vdub 1.49 has the ability to scan for what it calls JUNK frames, I use to use a hacked version called "vdub-mp3-freeze.exe" which made a log of the bad frames, then you can delete the bad frames (At keyframes)

So load the AVI into Vdub 1.49, select Video > scan for video stream errors. Since you know there is something wrong you would expect the program to find them. If it reports no errors, try switching the Video and Audio to streaming, and select SAVE AS, and save another copy. If there was any errors this can also fix them.

Make sure you have the latest copy of TMPGenc, hit the "Load" button and select your template (PAL/NTSC) VCD. Now if it still crashes, see if you can see where it has crashed by the output mpeg, if necessary you could chop that out with Vdub. But I think by now you will start to see things work. As I'm sure you have a bad AVI

Sometimes its necessary to use older versions of the above programs, they fix one thing and produce another bug, I think I have all versions here

Once you have fixed this problem, next time it will be different

I'm not too sure what I did differently, but I am now able to encode the AVI files to MPEG through TMPGenc. I think it was because I disabled Anti Virus. Anyway, was then able to take the MPEG and burn to VCD through NERO. Video quality the same but the audio isn't that great. A high pitch buzz in the back ground. Burned "Training Day". But I'm still unable to encode the 1st part of "The Others", part 2 went through fine. I'll try what you suggested, see what happens. I'm also going to try to enhance the audio. Wish me luck. Thanks again for your help.

If you have audio problems, you can save the audio as a WAV, then use a program like www.goldwave.com and filter out what you don't want. You can also normalize before saving. Then load that WAV instead of the AVI audio.
