ive been playing with auto gk for a while now and im in the process of ripping tv shows from dvd to xvid avi.
to play on wdtv live while saving space.

    My process:
    1. using dvdfab to rip each title to vob
    2. running vob through video redo to fix any possible av sync issues
    3. using auto gk and setting width to 720 and % to 80%

with auto gk it only does a single pass when you use %
if i use auto gk and select predefined or custom it does compress test and 2 pass encoding.

im wanting to set a fixed width of 720 with 2 pass encoding and compress it to whatever the compress test gives plus 5%

i have a vb script that scans the folder where i output the vob files for then runs it through video redo...
im wanting to add the above to my script.
i know i need to create a script for virtual dub mod but i have no clue where to start at this point...

i can create the vbs coding my self just need help creating the virtual dub mod script just like auto gk does.

once i have this done i can also add it as a scheduled task on my mc7 htpc for tv recordings.

Are you implying that the 1-pass encoding is in any way inferior to 2-pass encoding? If so, you're dead wrong. The only reason to use 2 passes is to get a particular size. If you want a particular quality at a particular resolution (720 width?), just run the single pass for the quality percentage you want.

Once you start talking about percentages again, you're back to 1-pass encoding. If you're talking about the AviSynth scripts that AutoGK uses, get them from the log and open them in VDubMod yourself if you want to do the encoding manually.

not implying the 1 pass is inferior to 2 pass im just wanting to be able to compress at an optimal %
some movies/tv shows may not look right @ 80% where others would still have good quality if they where at 70%

im wanting to do 1 pass encoding

im wanting to find a way to run test to determine the optimal quality for each mpg from dvd source
then incorporate that into a static script so that nothing changes except for the target quality.if this is possible

i can use the script that auto gk has in the log file and add it to my video redo script so that i can goto bed or work and it will
    1) run vob through video redo (DONE)
    2) take the resulting mpg and convert to xvid avi (need some help)
    3) delete the source mpg (DONE)

    this make sense?

I don't agree with you. About the only time that a lower quality might look similar in quality to a different source encoded at a higher quality is when there's a lot of noise or grain, because grain can hide a lot of faults. In general though, different sources done with the same percentage (quality) should look pretty similar. Just find a quality you're happy with (the default 75% is a pretty good start), and stick with it.
    this make sense?
Whatever makes you happy. My opinion is that the VideoRedo step isn't necessary because most audio synch problems result from decrypting improperly. Even if you do wind up with something out of synch, it's easier and faster to just fix the delay.

    ok thanks... for the assist...
    ill check out the guides...
my goal is to be able to have an automated script written in vbs that i can run as a scheduled task for my htpc when i get my tv tuner.
i have read a few threads where people have sync issues from stuff they recorded off tv... im just doing process mapping with dvds for now.
i should be good to go from here
