  1. I want to add a second monitor for video editing ... current monitor is a Samsung 226cw connected to an Nvidia Geforce 7900 GS Graphics card.
This card is a 256bit / 256MB card .. and although now not current was Graphics card of the year in 2006.

The card has 2 identical sockets ... is it just a case of plugging in the second monitor ? .... or do I need to add any drivers, change configutaion etc ?

Upgrade your GeForce driver then follow directions in the NVidia monitor setup application.

I like to use an LCD-TV as a second monitor with both DVI computer (menus) and video connections. The video picture is more representative than possible off the computer display card.

  3. Two identical sockets.. blue or white? if blue (I doubt it for this video card) they are VGA ports, and you will need a 2nd monitor with this type of connector or an adapter.
If white, they are most likely DVI plugs, and you will need a 2nd monitor with this connector, or a VGA-to-DVI adapter.
Either way, update your display driver to the latest offered by Nvidia for your particular video card.
Then shutdown and plug your second monitor. Once in the desktop, the control panel of the video card will allow you to customize the 2nd display (clone the 1st desktop, extend desktop, etc)
