If I have two subtitle streams, I can use PgcEdit to have stream 0 start automatically - and if I use DvdSubEdit, I can force the subs ( cannot be turned off).
If I have PgcEdit start stream1 automatically and use DvdSubEdit to force those subs - they can still be turned off.

Do 'forced' subs only apply to stream 0 (zero)?

They can be turned off. Actually, it's when they're selected but turned off that forced subs are shown. When selected and turned on all the subs in the stream are shown. If a different stream is selected, then you don't get the forced subs or any of the other subs in that stream. You seem to be saying, though, that you've made all the subs in that particular stream forced. If that's true, then I don't understand why you set it up that way.

No, they can be in any stream, or in multiple streams.

    From the DVDSubEdit help file:
    Code:
A “Forced Start” command can be used instead, in which case the subtitles are
displayed even if the subtitles are turned off in the player. During playback forced
subtitles are only shown if the stream is selected. In other words, if no stream is
selected, the forced subtitles will not be shown. If the stream is selected but
turned off, then only forced subtitles will be shown in that stream. If the stream is
selected and turned on, all subtitles will be shown. Forced subtitles are often used
when a character is speaking in a tongue that is foreign to the main language used
in the movie, for example aliens in a sci-fi movie.

Thank you - I see where my thinking has been wrong.
Because a family member was not easily able to manipulate the remote and needed a foreign language subtitle, my idea was to force the subtitles to start automatically - and forcing the subs to stay on regardless.
I see now that this can still result in the subs being turned off or switched anyway.

  4. Having the subtitle stream made to display by default (PGCEdit) should be enough, then. And then tell that person to keep his/her hands off of the remote control.
