It means you don't have the Xvid codec installed, or another codec that can display Xvid files. Simplest is to install the Xvid codec and try again.

OK here we go , i have downloaded sucessfully the xvid codec, it has now convertered the .avi file to a .m2v file but nero will still not burn this file as it has no vob files etc , ANY IDEAS ?

.m2v file is a video stream. It has no audio.
Try again with AVStoDVD. Set it to output either an ISO file, or better, a Video_TS folder. When it is finished, test play the DVD structure with Media Player Classic by opening the IFO file in the folder. When happy, burn with Imgburn.Read my blog here.

It will create them as part of the process, but at the end of the day you should have an ISO file ready to burn.
Personally, I output to a video_ts folder so I can test play it first, then burn if it is good. There is no speed advantage to burning from an ISO.Read my blog here.
