I used the recipe (avi synth) at
https://forum.videohelp.com/topic309213.html
to be able to use Virtual Dubmod to convert wmv to avi (xvid), but the file size is pretty large because I think the audio is pcm. Is there a way to get the audio into mp3 and therefore have a reasonably small file size? I don't want to process video twice. I used AviDemux to turn the pcm into mp3 (this seemed to work OK), but I was wondering if there was a software similar to Virtual Dubmod that would allow me to convert the wmv into avi and simultaneously give me mp3 audio. It seems that Virtual Dubmod doesn't have any adjustments for audio.
**EDIT** I figured out the audio adjustment in Virtual DubMod ( click on Stream>Stream List>right click the audio stream and select Full Processing Mode, right click again on the audio stream and select Compression, choose Lame MP3 and then select 128kbps and then click OK).

You've got it.
Watch out for video/audio sync problems after the audio conversion. Sometimes you have to convert to WAV with full processing, then add that back in and convert to MP3 that way. You can leave VDM open as you are doing this. Also the LAME MP3 ACM codec is a add on, though you may have already had it installed. I would recommend using CBR MP3 with VDM and LAME when re-encoding audio to avoid problems with future conversions of the file.

The WMV input plugin and the new version of Virtualdub handles the sync issues better than VirtualdubMod or Virtualdub MPEG-2. Fcchandler fixed the plugin to handle VFR which causes the sync issues in Windows media files.
Audio compression is under Audio instead of Streams in the normal versions of Virtualdub. -
Is there a way to use AutoGK to convert the WMV files to Xvid? I have had such great success using AutoGk with MPEG-2 conversions that I would like to do the same with some WMV movies (non-DRM) so that my standalone DVD player can play'em and AutoGK is so easy to use.
To be honest I don't quite understand all the configuration stuff in the Xvid codec, AVISynth, and VirtualDub hence my use of AutoGK.

No. AutoGK uses VirtualdubMod and VirtualdubMod cannot open a WMV without the help of Avisynth. AutoGK does not support WMV.
The new version of Virtualdub is an excellant tool that rivals programs costing $100 or more. It would be worth your while to learn how to use it. There are lots of people on this site that will help you and there is a Virtualdub forum where you can get help from the creators of this and other Virtualdub tools.
