  1. Not sure if I;m seeing something wrong, or if I maybe got a bad player. on avi playback of many different avi files, I see largeish purple or green splotches tinting the color underneath it. It could be playback quality loss, but I donlt recall seeing it this obvious with my previous philips player.

I'm going to compare palyback on my pc to see if I can confirm if it is the player with issues, or just the quality loss issues I;m seeing.

(This is on many various tv rips posted on usenet.)

Likely related to the chipset used and how the files are encoded.

  3. I just did a comparison with what my pc does, and did some tweaking to the settings on my plasm.. I turn the energy saver partially on, turned the contrast down some, and turned the color down a lot, and that gave me a closer representation to what I see on our computers here. Its like the color is MUCH hotter on this new player then our old one.

I'd say right now, color is set down to about 1/3rd of it's total amount possible. Since we only watch things on it off our dvd player anyway, its not like I'd need to kick it back up for broadcast anyway.

  4. Televisions have very different gamma than computer monitors. If your video was adjusted to look good on a computer monitor it will not look right on a TV. The problem you are describing sounds different though. Check the frame size of the video. Different players have different restrictions on the valid frame size of MPEG4 ASP encodes. Avoid using anything less than mod 4 (ie, integer multiples of 4) for the width and height. I find mod 2 often results in playback problems. And any encoder should refuse to encode mod 1.

  5. I've been downloading some tv shows from alt.binaries.tv, and the issue seems universal across the board from different people capping shows. I took back my first philips 5990-37, because I got a horrid looking startup image a few times, with what looked like the blue color gun completely missing. I'd suspect a bad cable, except I've had these for a year without issue on my old philips layer that died.

The first player I had though didn't seem to have this issue (at least I didn't notice it within the week I had it), but its more apparant on this new player.

Only thing is I did have a power outage, and I did have to reset all my tv settings, so that could be the culprit as well.

I wasn't sure however if there might have been different variances in the 5990, and if this issue had shown up in some versions of the player.

Best to check, before the opportunity to return it for a new replacement expires.

  6. I'm not sure what you mean by "I see largeish purple or green splotches tinting the color underneath it" but the picture looks "normal" from my 5990 via HDMI to LCD HDTV.

  7. Real dvds look fine.. the isue only comes up when I'm watching avi files.

Here's a cap from my pc, and along next to it, a pic I took with my digitial camera, hoping to compare them

The digital camera caps aren't going to 100% represent what we see on the plasma of course, but if you look at the wall on the figure's right, you can clearly see green and dark purple patches I'm talking about.. they ARE more pronounced in the digital camera's pickup, so I tried to balance that pic in the rightmost version, and if you compare that with what we see on our pc here, you can still clearly see the green and dark purple patches as well.

(If you look VERY closely, you can also stil make out the green and purple splotches on the wall, but off the pc, they are no where near as apparant.)

I'm wondering if there is some setting on the player I missed setting up properly for our plasma.. it's 720p, btw.
