I have used the b & w filter on the footage and saved to mpeg2.

 Do you see the prob?

That looks like interlacing artifacts. Notice that the horizontal lines only seem to appear on moving objects. If you play it back on a TV, it should look normal. Or try using a software player that can properly display interlaced material, such as VLC or MPC and choose a deinterlacing filter. Interlaced video would be the normal format for TV, if that's what your final display is going to be.

its gonna be played back through a mac monitor unfortunately. “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.”

It will be playing through DVD software on a mac. Not sure which player it is. Allpretty standard stuff I should think. “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.”
