    OK

I use winavi to convert between formats as it will do FLV to, avi wma etc, but it is a bit slow!

So what I am looking for is a converter that converts between formats & will also do FLV conversion. I don't need this to author dvds, just do format conversion! Is there something better & faster that will convert all fomats ?

Aside from being a cross post from https://forum.videohelp.com/topic341477.html which pretty much answers your question, I would add that WinAVI is one of the worst programs I have seen, and the only thing it has in it's favour, aside from the fact almost nobody actually pays for it, is that it is fast. It's not good quality or reliable, but it is fast.

The only thing slowing down your conversions is your computer. If you want to convert faster, spend money on hardware so you can use decent software at a faster speed.

    alternative to winavi?
    anything.

give an ffmpeg gui a try,
    like Avanti
    or winff, or Super

you mention encoding to windows media formats,
    why?
    look at wmnicenc

it's best to be specific about goals.

I agree WinAVI is crap, but I'm curious about something: I have twice recently
seen you attribute the popularity of WinAVI to easy piracy of it, but from what
I've seen, pirated copies of all video software is easy to find, so why don't pirates
    steal better software?

My own guess as to why WinAVI is popular:

    1) It's a one-click sorta program.
    2) While not good, it IS fast.
    3) It converts from (nearly) any format to (nearly) any format.

To try to answer the OP's question, I don't deal with flv files very often, but I
recall getting good results converting FROM flv with MediaCoder, and TO flv
    with AviDemux.

I see a lot of WinAVI icons on student laptops. When I ask why they use it, they usually say it is either because because their friend gave it to them, or because the place they download their movies from told them it was the best - which shows how little movie pirates care about quality.

  6. if you find any piece of software that does everything that winavi does let me know..

winavi quality is extremly good for the time it needs to encode.

i can spend 4 hours converting something with a so called "good app" and yes it will probably give this quality.. but in mean time , the chance to receive error,, or anything else,, you have to start all over again,, and the fact that you can't use your pc for the time its encoding..

while winavi is easy , no worries,, movie of 3 hours gets done in about 30min, and it even encodes subtitles to it.. what else do you want? why complain ?
