We had just gotten a digital cable box recently (two months ago), and yesterday, I decided to sit back and watch a DVD for the first time in months.
What happened was, when the DVD was loading, the picture was black. The sound from the menu came out just fine, but there was nothing on the screen.
I didn't want to go any further by pushing any buttons, thinking I would've messed up the system even worse if I did.
So what do you think is the problem?

First thing , cable box may now be connected to tv input where dvd video input had been previous = check cables
A: You should confirm what the video output is setup in the dvd player setup menu, sellect correct option
B: Still no video, try other dvd's, if still no picture, dvd player may be faulty = replace -
Cable has nothing to do with DVD playback. Is cable working?

Probably obvious, but you are playing back the DVD with a set top DVD player to a TV or video monitor? If it were a computer, there are other possibilities.

Well, the thing is, the VCR half works just fine, but it's the DVD half that doesn't show the picture.

Some players have different outputs for the VHS side and the DVD side. You need to check your manual to ensure it is still correctly connected to the TV.
