Ok here is the deal I have made quite a few avi/divx and they are all done the same way. they are 640x352 resolution mp3 128 kbs. Most of these avis play on the PS3 but I have a few that for some reason will play on the mac computer and my stand alone divx dvd player but will not play on the ps3 either streaming or copied from disk. Has anyone else had this problem? is there some catch like the ones with the most problems are tv shows which are smaller episodes and I had a problem with the reaping but other movies I did at the same time with the same settings work perfectly. I am stumped.

from the tests i've run (which i'll admit have been limited), it seems as though the main culprit behind it have been what you choose to encode with. it seems that avi files (either xvid or divx) encoded under mencoder won't run, whereas ffmpeg encoded ones will. i've not tested the ceiling resolution of what the ps3 will handle, but i'm sure a quick search on google would reveal that your files were well within the parameters of playback.

i'm not quite sure the nitty gritty detailed reasons why this is happening, but i'm sure it has to do with the fact that the ps3 update is done in increments rather than releasing the whole thing in one package. down the line, theres a chance that currently unplayable files will play.
