i am trying to convert 12 hours of dvd's to mpeg1 format. i would like to get a program that will convert it as quick as possible but not lose any of the quality. i have tried a few programs and either they lock up or the audio is off. I can convert them in 2 hour portions but no less. and i know mpeg1 is old but that is what i need for the people to be able to use it in their program. Please help.

Not possible. Any conversion will lose quality. Converting to MPG-1 will lose quite a bit of quality.

If you are thinking of VCD MPG-1 format, that's 1150Kbps bitrate. Your original DVDs, if commercial, are probably closer to 8000 - 9000Kbps. That's quite a difference. Most burned DVDs will be 6000Kbps or more if they have much quality to start with.

You could use VOB2MPEG to extract a MPEG-2 file from the VOBs, then re-encode to MPG-1 format. TMPGEnc encoder is free for that format use. But it's not fast, especially for 12 hours of video.

Even with a faster encoder, you may looking a quite a few hours of encoding, a lot more than 12 hours, unless you have a very fast CPU and lots of hard drive space.

    Use TmpgEncXpress

You'll have to use a high bitrate to keep the quality level high, though.

As redwudz mentioned, VCD qulity will not look as good as the original MPEG2
