I have a High Def. DVR that I have filled with HD movies I recorded. Could you guys give me some pointers on where to begin for capturing? Preferably low cost and if you can, don't use a video capture card. I was thinking about using 1 of these:

No , what you have listed will NOT give you HD outcome , all downscaled .

  3. Could you tell us which DVR you are using to record in HD? I've been looking everywhere.

Those capture devices you linked to, would only be able to capture your DVR recordings in standard definition. The best inputs they have are S-Video, which is only 480i . The "HD" they do is off the DV connection of a camcorder, or ATSC broadcasts.

I also didn't see an on-board Mpeg-2 encoder (maybe I missed it in the specs), which means your computer will have to be up to par.

Sorry abou the upstart about high def. dvr's. My Dishnetwork providers gave me a DVR with High def support from them. I didn't know the reaction to this would be people wondering where I got it from. TiVo has an HD DVR, so does sony.

Also, since the 2 products I mentioned don't work for my purposes, could you suggest some?

There are none*. You are limited to S-Video 480i letterbox downconversion. Possibly the box can be set to 480i (wide) over S-Video (no letterbox).

Those products you linked will permit you to capture over the air local broadcasts. Antenna required depends on your proximity to the DTV transmitters.

    * If your box has an IEEE-1394 port, you may see some local channels appear there in DVHS format (MPeg2 M2t). Try CapDVHS to the computer over IEEE-1394.
