i didn't want to start a new thread so i'll post my problem here. i care about quality more than anything so i decided to try FAVC to convert my avi's to dvd. i'm running into a weird problem. i'm unable to encode using 2 pass VBR. quenc crashes no matter what option i use. with hc, i get empty folders when it's done encoding in 2 pass vbr. the only option that works is constant quantization in HC. does anyone have any idea why i'm having these problems?

HC makes a database on the first pass and uses it to govern the rate at which it outputs the MPEG on the second pass.Originally Posted by smoothie25

So you need write permission in HC's working directory, which I believe is the same directory it's installed in.
I guess it doesn't make the database for CBR.

Open the HC folder while it's running and see if a file is growing there during the first pass.

You can just run HC directly if you have an AVS file. Use FitCD if you don't have another way.

 EDIT:
I'm just running HC now. For a 50 minute AVI it created a 200 MB file, hc01.dbs, in its program directory.

Perhaps try upgrading Avisynth to the latest version and see if that kills the bug.
 http://downloads.sourceforge.net/avisynth2/AviSynth_070919.exe?modtime=1190242334&big_mirror=0

As it affects both encoders it feels Avisynth related, and the fact that HC can can do it in CQ mode points to the script being okay.
CQ mode is a good, and quick, alternative to 2 pass mode though - the results should be comparable.

I tested a small file and HC created a 13mb hc01.dbs file. After that, it encodes the audio and then the working dir disappears and the dvd folder is left empty. I'm guessing this is the same problem with quenc. The program quits after an error pops up right before the second pass. Must be a windows problem. So how do I get write persmission in the working dir ? Should I reinstall windows xp? I already have the new version of avisynth installed and it didn't help.

You might want to check keep working files so you can see what was done last.
