I've been trying to encode a couple of avi movies with TMPGenc Express 4.0. They apear to open with video and sound when I'm setting them up to encode. But when the encode is finished there is no video, only sound. Anyone know how to solve this problem?

Hey love2learn,
Great handle, I hope you're up to it!
It sounds like you are missing a video codec that TEMPGenc needs to translate the AVI file into an MPEG. If you don't already have it, go grab a copy of Gspot and load your AVI file into it and see if Gspot reports you are missing a video codec or not. If so, Gspot will tell you what you need so you can download the required codec.
Post back with your progress!
Cheers!

It said xvid codecs are installed on gspot. I don't have problems with any other files I have. The xvid video file actually does show on TMPGenc when I'm setting it up to encode and also shows on the preview screen when encoding. But when it's finished encoding and I go to the encoded file. it plays with sound but no video?

It's ok I found the problem now. Thanks for trying to help, although Gspot didn't tell me what I was missing even by trying to render the video. I found out by tryig to open the xvid movie through real plyaer, and it connected to to real networks to find out what I needed. Turns out I needed the Mpeg-2 codec. I downloaded Stinky's codec from www.free-codecs.com and now it encodes exactly as it should. I love finding the solution to problems... it's such a good feeling learning along the way

Windows doesn't include the MPEG-2 codec with the OS, though some versions of Vista now do. Most users never notice as they add a player like PowerDVD and it puts in the codec. Then it can be used by other players.
A good player to have handy is the freeware VLC. It has it's own codecs, so it's one way to see if you have a problem with your installed codecs. It will also play just about any format video, so you may not have to install codecs you may rarely use.
The exception for VLC playback is Real and Quicktime formats. But there is Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative players available that work well with those formats. I avoid Real One player as it likes to 'Phone home' to much for my tastes and adds way too much 'overhead' for just playing videos. Quicktime from Apple is similar, IMO.
And if you use Gspot, make sure it's a recent version, like 2.70. Older versions don't work well with MPEG files. -
