I converted a vob file to avi using super (I tried virtualdub but the dimensions were wierd). I want to convert it to mpeg-4 in quicktime pro but no video is showing, just audio. I checked the file with gspot and the video codec is divx5/6 which gspot says is installed. Do I have to install codecs specially for quicktime? Or is there anything else I can do?

It would be easier to use VirtualDub Mod and open the VOBs in it, then convert to your AVI type file in one step. I would avoid the extra encode as you will just lose quality and waste time. A VOB should have standard framesize that VDM will accept. If you mean the Divx framesize, the width must be a multiple of 4 and the height must be a multiple of 2. Or you can use Xvid as it has less restrictions.

Thanks for that. Ive done it - downloaded xvid and the ac3acm audio codec. But the output avi seems to run too fast though quality is OK. And instead of the audio, there's just wierd noise. Not sure what to do now

I'm not sure Quicktime Pro supports AVIs and DivX/Xvid all that well under Windows. (I could be wrong, of course. I've never tried it.) But if you're already using SUPER to convert from VOB to AVI, why not just have SUPER convert from VOB to MPEG4, instead?

I think you are right about quicktime. Im sure there is a fix somewhere but I gave up and moved to virtualdubmod. This is doing what I want. I dont know if super would have been better...

But there are comb artefacts. I have looked it up but a lot of the stuff that is written is beyond me. I wondered if anybody knew a good fix for this combing in virtualdubmod?

  6. Try Donald Graft's Smart Deinterlace filter for VirtualDub.
