    TMPGenc Problem

I've been using TMPGenc 2.5 to batch encode MPEG1 video for a very long time.

I strip out the sound into a WAV file with VirtualDub and then merge the original AVI (in DivX or XViD) with the WAV in TEMPGenc, using the VCD template.

(I've moved the priority of the DirectShow up to the top in the VAPI plugin options - as I've always done to avoid problems)

Typical recent behaviour of TMPGenc, however, is for it to simply close with no error message at seemingly random times whilest making its way through the batch list. I don't believe this is a "bad frame" problem because it will be fine for a few more encodes when I set it going again and when it closes half way through a movie, it will usually encode fine when started again. It may then encode several more movies and shut down again several movies later.

There is no error message and when TEMPGenc is started up again "Working" is shown for the last movie in the batch list, even though it plainly is not working.

Any help or enlightenment appreciated but please just don't tell me to update TEMPGenc. I know I'm using an old version but I've been using it for about 2 years and its been fine.
    Thanks.

Could be so many different causes. Start with checking your hard drive for files and apps which have been installed around the same time the crashing began. Look in Windows\system32 and in \Program Files\

Check for dust on your CPU fan. Seriously.

Installed FFDShow recently? This used to cause havoc with my TMPGenc (shutdowns, crashes etc). Problems supposed to be fixed in latest FFDShow versions, but with so many updates lately - who knows?

Thanks for the input guys (n'gals? maybe) but I've had no luck solving this problem and frankly, I'm really surprised that I have not found many others with the same sort of problem.

I'm sysadmin for my job and have a netwok at home with six clents and SBS on a server.

I've used TMPGenc on four different clients in batch mode and had the same problem occuring often. I've used several different versions of TMPGenc as well.

I've used it with codecs that I've installed myself as well as with FFDshow and K-Lite codec packs.

Every which way the app has a tendancy to just shut down during batch processing. It just quietly closes. No record of an error in any events logs. No disernable pattern. It seems to just close when it feels like it.

It is most annoying. I get stuff ready to batch encode overnight and when I check it out the next day, the app has inevitably closed at some point during the night. I just have to hope that it gets through as many as possible before it decides to close.

Again. This is not a Windows problem. It is a TMPGenc problem. It has happened before now but recently with increased frequency. For 2 yrs, it was fine and now...

I know it sounds crazy but it is the truth. I even had to conclude that it could be someone out there mucking me about with Sub7 or other RAT but it happens when all net traffic is physically blocked.

Ah well... guess I'll just plod on...
