Just got a new iPod with video and wanted if there is a good freeware program that converts DVDs to the iPod format.

Try SUPER. If it works for you, good. The best tool, I don't know.

You may have to decrypt the DVD with a program like DVDFab Decrypter and convert the decrypted DVD to one large MPEG with VOB2MPG first, but there are no quality losses with that. All those programs are freeware.

I tend to recommend Videora iPod Converter over SUPER, at the moment... but I haven't tried the new 2.x versions, yet. (My sister's the one with the 5G iPod, and I haven't had any reason to convert videos for it, for a while.)

Edit: Oops, I forgot to mention... yes, I know Videora isn't an all-in-one ripping and converting program. And I'm not sure if it'll accept VOB files as input. But, to my knowledge (and as redwudz mentioned above), none of the free options include a ripper (one that'll work with protected DVDs, at that), so you'll likely need another program to do that, anyway.

And (personally), I'd rather convert VOBs to AVI using AutoGK (or convert them to MPEG using VOB2MPEG) than feed them to SUPER, and use the result with Videora. (Not that I'm putting down SUPER.)

I also vote for Videora iPod Converter. Super is great but quality wise is always second!

O.T.: If I find a way to batch convert x264 with virtualdub, I won't use Super for a long - long time... Does someone has a solution for this?

Today until 12:00 PM, there is a free program that will convert videos. I have not tried because I do not have an iPod. I suggest that you read the comments first.

Always "run as administrator" the activation and setup file if you are using Vista (don't know about XP).

Use a chain of apps -- DVDFab Decrypter, DGMPGDec, AviSynth, and ffmpeg. All free and tons of flexibilty. Not a "one-click" solution but will give best results.
