I have some Divx Discs that will not play in the latest Divx player from www.divx.com

Printed on the back is a message; "When new, this disc includes one limited viewing period. A registered Divx-featured DVD player is required for use."

These are factory discs. I suspect that hey may have been a 1 time rental or some other useless idea spawned by Digital Paranoia in the 1998 time frame. Is there any use for this type of disc?

Divx or DIVX? I believe the old DIVX format was all CAPS. DivX as in DivX networks has nothing to do with the old format. They had proprietary players that hooked up to the phone line.

DIVX is all Caps on the case. In the Copyright notice, it reads; © 1998 Divx, Pat. Pending. I can scan a case if it will shed some light on this issue.

Sounds to me like you have one of the old format discs that had time limited watching (sounds familiar, huh?) and required a special DVD player that was connected to a phone line as celtic_druid said. There's nothing you can do with the disc except keep it for a souvenir.

The name Divx (also written as DivX) was deliberately chosen to take a shot at the failed DIVX system. You can read about the failed system at
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIVX
After reading the article, the discs sound pretty useless to me. You're not missing anything by being unable to play them. And no, there are no PC programs that understand this old format.

Thanks, jman98, that explained the entire issue. More garbage to dispose of.
