i didn't think an avi would play in a div x player, but the more i look around this site, it looks as though avi's and xvid/divx's are the same thing.

    so... will it work?

if not, what program (freeware hopefully) do i need to convert from avi to xvid/divx?

Avi is the container for video, audio, subtitle text and information text.

Divx and xvid are variants of the mpeg4 codec used to compress video to an avi file usually having a .avi extension but sometimes a divx compressed video may have a .divx extent which can be renamed to avi if you prefer.

A divx player will play avi files encoded with most mpeg4 variant codecs compressed with a mpeg4 (h263)simple profile (Divx Home theatre profile) with no gmc or qpel to be compatible with most players.

In general terms, avi files could be uncompressed RGB or compressed with many other codecs like DV, h-264, mjpeg based codecs (like picvideo), Huffyuv, Cinepak, flv1, flv4 etc... and might have an .avi extension but not be compatible with a divx player.

It is true that some of these would be obscure today and that likely many avi are encoded with divx/xvid or mpeg4 but sometimes the way it is encoded with a complex profile or the chosen audio codec make it incompatible with a standalone divx player.

There is a Divx test cd at the top of the DVD Players page. You can download, burn, and use this disc to test which formats you player supports. Then you just need to ensure all of the files that you want to play meet those specifications.
