It happens with every media player at the default settings, so I'm sure it's not the problem with the player settings but something else.

The blacks part of the video becomes grey, and the colors seemed washed out, making the video too bright and make me feel really bad to know that I'm watching the video not in the best quality possible.

I did searched through google, and some suggestions I've found did not solved my problem.

However, I am convinced that the main cause of this problem might be the nVidia driver for my 8800GTX. They use different drivers from the rest of the series, and I'm having problem with this one (though I'm not 100% if this is what caused the problem).

I'm using the LATEST nVidia driver for 8800 series which is 97.92, tried both English version and International version, and it's the same. I even uninstalled and changed it back to the old version that came with the card as an installation CD, and yet it's still the same. If anyone here has 8800 series graphic card, can you please confirm this?

THE ONLY UNWANTED SOLUTION I FOUND is using VLC media player. Now I didn't say that changing the player itself solved the problem, because the default settings do have the same problem. What I've changed is in Preferences >> Video Output Modules and change from "default" to "Windows GDI video output". It gives the video as the perfect quality as it could be, but it also got disadvantages. The video isn't anti-aliased, and whenever I make it full screen, I could see its pixelation, like how I try to stretch the bitmap image. For example, you could see the screenshot below, I took the screenshot while it's in full screen mode and cut it out, so you can see how bad it gets in full screen.

Hmm and for a strange reason, I could take "print screen" from Windows GDI mode, but in the normal/default mode, the video that suppose to be there... just blanked out.

Sorry for the long post, but I'm trying to be as descriptive as possible, as this problem is a serious problem to me (I'm kind of a movie geek) and I want this problem to be fixed ASAP.

    Thanks in advance,
    Nattawat

I would suggest checking the overlay settings in the video drivers first. They set the base levels that the plays then work from.

    Mind if I ask how?

I had been playing with "Color Correction" for nvidia settings though, but nothing changed

I just tried changing "Overlay" in the Color Correction mode, and it actually changed the brightness/contrast of the movie.

However, I feel like this shouldn't has to be done in the first place. The playback itself shouldn't have problem, and it shouldn't requires configuration to make it better.

Afterall, the video looks slightly better, but there is no way I could configure it to be the exact same quality as what I see in Windows GDI. It will either be too dark, or too bright.

So I'm still looking for ways to correct this without manually changing the brightness/contrast, because I don't think that was the problem...

Hey, I'm having the same problem. And I found another guy who is expierencing this.It is really annoying.I brought my card to the shop(8800GTS) back ,but they said it is normal. When I adjust the overlay brightness in the driver settings it looks decent, but strange and not like the video I was used to see with my 7800GT . We(me and my friend) are writing to nvidia to solve this problem. PM me your email if u want to know how it goes, and what nvidia's support says.

  6. Open two media players at the same time. Play a video in both. If one looks bad and the other looks good you have a video overlay problem (only one player at a time can use the graphics card's video overlay feature, the second player will display directly to the Desktop). You should be able to adjust the video overlay brightness, contrast, and color settings via your graphics card's configuration applet from Control Panel. The settings should be remembered so you don't have to do this for every video.

jagabo we know that, but shouldn't it be setted correctly after a fresh install? I've corrected my overlay via Control Panel in XP ,but Control Panel in vista is broken. Something is wrong with these overlays with G80 series.... Ones plays too bright , others plays good.

Both ATI and nVidia seem to screw it up all the time. There are dozens of message here from people with the same problem.

It's not a great solution, but you can disable overlay until you get fixed drivers.

jagabo through all the forums I found only 2 people complaining about bright video playback. Since overlay is a playback straight from the videocard, maybe there are some defected G80 gpus ?

Bright, dark, bad colors... almost always overlay problems.

That's a possibility. But with all the changes in Windows Vista it's probably driver related.

Try using Media Player Classic which lets you choose between many different overlay options. View -> Options -> Playback -> Output.
